AUTHOR'S NOTE:

“Girl Lesson #4” contains a phrase I wrote while in Denver for AWP in 2010: “city of sling-shot sun.” As I’d been working on this series of “Girl Lessons,” that phrase morphed into something more gender related. I knew I wanted to touch on the warnings girls receive about certain types of men but I wanted something less cliched than biker bad boys and high school dropouts. Those urban men with the sun bouncing around in their eyes fit the bill.
